Kylie Jenner let it roar at Schiaparelli in Paris — literally. The Kylie Cosmetics founder and reality TV star attended the fashion house’s Haute Couture Spring Summer 2023 fashion show on January 22, wearing an actual lion head on her shoulder, a straight-off-the-runway piece that brought out her inner Leo.
Kylie, who sat front row at the show, donned a custom strapless Schiaparelli gown inspired by one that walked the runway with a fitted silhouette and luxe ruched velvet fabric. Attached to the gown was a truly enormous lion head with a full mane, completely covering one side of Kylie’s body and brushing her chin. Because the lion was so attention-grabbing, Kylie kept the rest of her look simple, wearing her hair in a high, retro-inspired ponytail and opting for a subtle makeup look and minimal jewelry.
The lion was just one of the fantastical creatures spotted on the Schiaparelli runway. The line, founded in the ’20s by the avant-garde designer Elsa Schiaparelli, has long been known for its surrealist creations and trompe l’oeil creations, a tradition continued by its current creative director Daniel Roseberry.
Over the past few years, we’ve seen celebs like Rihanna and Doja Cat in designs from the line, as well as Kylie’s big sister Kim Kardashian, who wore a Hulk-style corset gown for the family Christmas party in 2020. For the Spring-Summer ’23 show, models (including Naomi Campbell!) stalked the runway in the animal kingdom’s finest, including a black faux fur coat with a wolf head at the shoulder. The animals looked super realistic, but don’t worry — each one was made of foam, not fur.
Kylie wasn’t the only attendee leaning into the dreamlike vibes of the show. Doja Cat skipped the animal gown in favor of covering her entire body, including her scalp and her eyelids (!!!) in bright crimson red Swarovski crystals (30K to be exact, all applied by hand) to match her strapless crimson beaded gown.
